Green Skincare – Do We Give it the Greenlight?

What does the term “green skincare” really mean?

AHD Team: I think there are a couple of definitions you could consider. Many people think of “clean” products as being free of ingredients that some people feel are toxic or harmful. “Green” products are generally considered as naturally derived as well as ethically sourced and packaged in a sustainable way.

How can you assure a product is completely green?

AHD Team: There isn’t one way to absolutely and truly define this. It’s not something that’s regulated by the FDA, so companies have a lot of latitude in the definitions they give their product. Some of it is simply marketing. There are a couple of “watchdog” type groups like Ecocert and B Corp certification that assess for “green” products.

Is green skincare safe to use?

AHD Team: Short answer would be yes. Long answer would be that as something not regulated by the FDA, there would be no guarantee. Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean you want to put it on your face. Think poison ivy!

Which skin types benefit the most from green skincare?

AHD Team: Probably most any skin type. If you are extremely sensitive to fragrance, proceed with caution since many “natural” products can be in fragrance mixes, which are a common allergen to the skin.

What are your top two must have green skincare products?

AHD Team: For any skincare routine, I would always want sunscreen to be a part of the mix. Zinc is certainly an “organic” ingredient and is a great sunscreen. Another good choice would be a topical vitamin C to act as an antioxidant.

What would you rate this skincare trend on the glow-up potential scale?

AHD Team: I would rate as a 4. I am definitely concerned about reducing environmental waste, cutting down on packaging and being cognizant of how products are sourced. As for “clean. Products”, I personally don’t feel at this point there is compelling scientific evidence showing some of the ingredients demonized by environmental working group are harmful, but time and scientific evidence may change that.
